Director of Guitar Instruction Erik Ringstad is back with another edition of Real Guitar Tips.

Real Guitar Tips is jam-packed with short, informative, and fun tips to take your playing to the next level. Erik teaches guitar lessons at our Burlington, MA location.

In this lesson, Erik plays Somervilletime (based on the jazz standard Summertime), bouncing between octave melodies and guide tone voicings. Erik explains, "Guide tone voices are basically when you strip a chord down to its most essential notes. My first chord is Dmi7, moving to G7, but all I'm going to play for each is the 3rd and the 7th degrees." Watch the video to see how Erik uses this approach to create a soulful, classic jazz guitar sound.
