Music for Real: Child wants to rock; parent wants classical training

Music for Real is a column written for The Burlington Union by instructors from The Real Schoolmusic for real of Music.

This week, House Sound Engineer Ryan Axford answers the complicated question, "My daughter wants learn how to rock out on guitar and I want her to have a classical music education. Is there a happy compromise?"

Ryan says, absolutely! Of course, first he considers the definition of a classical music education. What makes you a classically trained musician? Even more importantly, "The wonderful thing about taking music lessons is that you are exposed to classical techniques while learning things that you want to learn. A great teacher will teach these techniques without the child even realizing it."
